How good are you at applying for a paralegal or legal-field related job?
The South Florida Paralegal Association (SFPA) is accepting entries for its annual student scholarship: First prize is $1,000.00 and second prize is $500.00. You must be currently enrolled in a 2019/2020 Paralegal/Legal Studies Program to participate. Award checks will be made payable to your school for your benefit. Each winner will also receive a free, one-year SFPA student membership plus a special invitation to our holiday party to be personally presented with the award.
The deadline for submission is Monday, December 9, 2019 at 9:00am EST. We realize it’s a short amount of time, but, there will be times when you only have a day to prepare the cover letter. Plus, it’s for $1000 or $500 dollars, so we need to test some level of skills.
Submit attachment via email to firstname.lastname@example.org. You should receive a confirmation email within 2 hours. Please refer to “General Instructions” for specific details. No access to Westlaw or Lexis required. All necessary information is available online.
Entry should not be longer than four pages maximum. Please, no handwritten submissions.
You must submit your entry as an attachment to an email with subject line: SFPA 2019 Scholarship Entry. Email to: Admin@sfpa.info.
In the body of the email to Admin@sfpa.info (and not on your attached entry), please be sure to include the following:
1. Your full name, mailing address, phone number, and email address;
2. Name of program and school of enrollment; and
3. Name of program director or your advisor with best contact phone number and email address.
Your attachment entry must not contain any personal identifying information; it must simply be your entry. On your entry, refer to yourself as Paralegal or some generic variation thereof. Use a generic identifier, e.g., address, phone number, email address, etc…
Please save the date of Wednesday, December 11. If you win, we ask that you attend our Holiday Party to be held at the Open Stage Club in Coral Gables where we will present you the award (your presence is not required to win).
Winners will be announced by Tuesday afternoon, December 10.
How good are you at applying for a job? Please find any job posting for which you would like to apply. Provide a cover letter, and include the job posting as exhibit A and your resume as exhibit B (please find a way of clipping/submitting the job posting; it’s up to you).
Feel free to apply for a job in South Florida or to apply for any position in the country. If you feel you do not meet all the requested qualifications then find a way to promote yourself to make up for the deficiency.
Remember, on the cover letter and your resume, please do not use your personal identifying information. Use “Paralegal” or some generic variation thereof; use a different address and phone number.
We are looking for cover letters that professionally and successfully convey who you are and why you should be hired.
Any typo or improper formatting will count against you. In real life, a simple typo can ruin your chances at successfully getting the job.
Hint: your entry needs to include attachments A and B. Properly and professionally making references to your attachments is a plus.
Hint: in past years, applicants have not used the subject line as requested in the General Instructions. This counts against you.
Please remember to save the date of Wednesday, December 11. If you win, we ask that you attend our Holiday Party to be held at the Open Stage Club in Coral Gables where we will present you the award (your presence is not required to win).
What type of paralegal will you be? For reference, read the following. A bit old-fashion, but still applicable.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Message_to_Garcia
