changes to NALA bylaws

Two significant changes to the bylaws were recommended by the Board and passed by NALA members at the recent convention.

The first change replaced the term “legal assistant” with “paralegal”; on the corollary, references to the CLA will be replaced with CP.  Though, it is still one’s choice to call him/herself legal assistant or paralegal.  The second, with more profound effect, is that the chairs of the CP and ACP certifying boards will now become non-voting members of the Board.  This was done to avoid possible conflict of interests to satisfy a requirement by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).  NALA has submitted an application to the Commission to have the CP and ACP exams accredited for compliance with NCAA standards.  Results of the application will be known later in the year.
