SFPA hosted a charity Thanksgiving Dinner for the Women and Children's Center of the Miami Rescue Mission on November 19, 2009.   We had a fabulous response from our paralegal community donating goods, making monetary donations which purchased day-to-day necessities such as baby formula, and/or their valuable time in making this event a total success.

The residents genuinely appreciated our efforts and the smiles on the children's faces made all the work and effort that went into planning the event very worthwhile.  Photos of the event are listed below.  Hopefully, the photos will put a smile on your face and a warm feeling in your heart as it did for all the volunteers that day.

P.S.  The Women and Children's Center needs help year-round.  Please keep them in mind if you would like to make a donation to them any other time of the year.  Your contributions are tax deductible.  For more information, please visit their website at http://www.caringplace.org/women.htm

SFPA is proud to congratulate the following new CPs that were students of our Review and Study course for the July 2009 NALA Certified Paralegal Exam:

    Carline Ahmeti
    Cindy Bernal
    Carol Bustos
    Elizabeth O'Rourke
    Michael Santorufo
    Jennifer Schulte

Thus far, we have heard from 6 of 10 students of the Review and Study course offered by SFPA for the July exam, that passed on their first try. That is 20 percent higher than the 40 percent first-time pass rate projected by NALA!

Best of luck to the next class of students starting this Saturday in the course for the December exam!

    Sincerely,
    Julia Gordon-Taylor
    NALA Liaison for SFPA

The Florida Registered Paralegal Standing Committee will hold a public forum on September 10, 2009, from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. at the Tampa Airport Marriott Hotel, Tampa, Florida.

The forum will focus on the following two topics:
    1. Rule 20-2.1(d) defines Approved Paralegal Program as a program approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) or a program that is in substantial compliance with the ABA guidelines and accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency approved by the United States Department of Education. Many schools are accredited but not ABA approved or in substantial compliance. Should the rule be amended to require only graduation from an school accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency approved by the United States Department of Education?
    2. Rule 20-3.1(c), the grandfathering provision, is set to sunset on March 1, 2011. Should the rule sunset or should grandfathering be a permanent part of the rule?

If time permits, the Committee will consider other comments. Speakers will be taken on a first come, first served basis and will be limited to 10 minutes each. Written submissions will also be accepted. Please send written comments to frp@flabar.org or mail to FRP, The Florida Bar, 651 East Jefferson Street, Tallahassee, FL 32399-2300.

SFPA members donated toys to benefit the children confined to Miami Children's Hospital during the holidays at their recent Holiday Party.  The gifts received were warmly welcomed by the children in the hospital.  A big Thank You to all who participated in this worthy cause.  A copy of the letter received from the coordinator at Miami Children's Hospital is linked below:
